Barbra Streisand donated her Ramirez Canyon estate in Malibu to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy in November 1993. ^[1] Alex Trebek, a famous television host known for Jeopardy!, donated 74 acres of his Hollywood Hills property to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy in 1998. ^[2] State appraisers valued the roughly 17,000-square-foot property at $15 million, making it the most valuable property ever donated to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area at that point. ^[3] The conservancy envisioned the estate becoming an environmental research centre, space for visiting scholars, and a site for conferences with eventual public access. ^[4] The donated land serves as a wildlife corridor intended to allow deer, coyotes, and other animals to move between different areas of the Santa Monica Mountains. ^[5] The donation nearly doubled the amount of land designated for public parks in that sector of the city. ^[6] The Los Angeles Times reported in 1998 that the property donated by Trebek had an estimated value of 2 million dollars. ^[7] Joseph T. Edmiston, the conservancy's executive director, stated that the donation was the most valuable property ever donated to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area at that point. ^[8]
