According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the habitat of the Bornean orangutan has been reduced by at least 55% over the last two decades. ^[1] The Bornean orangutan is currently classified as Critically Endangered due to habitat loss, deforestation, and human conflicts in Southeast Asia. ^[2] The Bornean orangutan population has decreased by more than 50% in approximately 60 years. ^[3] The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) classifies the Borneo orangutan as Critically Endangered. ^[4] Historical estimates based on interviews in Indonesian Borneo suggest that between 2,000 and 3,000 orangutans were killed annually for decades due to conflicts with humans, hunting, and illegal trade. ^[5] Conservationists describe the Borneo orangutan as an 'umbrella species' because protecting its needs helps conserve the habitat of many other species. ^[6] The WWF estimates that between 2,000 and 3,000 Borneo orangutans die each year due to human activities and habitat loss. ^[7]
