On Tuesday, 41 media outlets, 63 civil organizations, and 164 personalities in Venezuela signed a manifesto demanding the full restoration of freedom of expression, information, and opinion. ^[1] On August 31, the National Union of Journalists in Venezuela distributed a manifesto titled 'Manifesto for the Restoration of Freedom of Expression' supported by 38 media outlets, 63 organizations, and 164 individuals. ^[2] The document calls for the immediate repeal of five specific laws: the Law Against Hate, the Law of Social Responsibility in Radio, Television, and Electronic Media (Ley Resorte), the Law of Oversight of NGOs, the Simon Bolivar Law, and the Anti-Blocking Law. ^[3] The manifesto demands the immediate cessation of persecution against journalists, creators, activists, and citizens, as well as the release of individuals detained for exercising their right to opinion. ^[4] The manifesto proposes reversing 27 years of state censorship and repression to restore democratic guarantees in Venezuela. ^[5] The manifesto requests that the National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL) cease operating as an instrument of censorship and transform into an organization based on transparency criteria. ^[6] The signatories of the manifesto argue that current restrictions in Venezuela have systematically violated citizens' rights to inform and be informed. ^[7]
