At the intersection of Brazil and Bolognesi streets in the center of Iquitos, the victim was intercepted by hitmen moving in a motorcycle, one of whom shot him, causing his instant death. ^[1] On September 1, 2025, agents of the Criminal Investigation Department (Depincri) in Iquitos detained Julio César Noa Ahuanari, alias 'Frejol', for his alleged involvement in the murder of journalist Raúl Celis López. ^[2] Giuseppe Carlo Leonardi Vargas, 43, shot and killed his wife Karina Patricia Gutiérrez Hidalgo, 49, and their 22-year-old son Giuseppe Augusto Leonardi Gutiérrez outside their home on Calle Los Jazmines in Santa Anita, Peru, in the early hours of 2020-08-31. ^[3] The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, May 7, 2025, when the driver of Radio Karibeña was traveling in a mototaxi towards his workplace. ^[4] The suspect was arrested during an intelligence operation at the 9-kilometer mark of the Iquitos-Nauta interprovincial highway in the San Juan Bautista district and remained at the department awaiting further procedures. ^[5] A witness who spoke to RPP said the victim was beaten frequently and often had visible injuries such as black eyes, and described her as from the jungle, alone, without family. ^[6] After the shootings, Leonardi Vargas took refuge in his residence, and agents of the Policía Nacional with Santa Anita serenos entered the home to arrest him; once he noticed them, Vargas fired two shots inside the house to avoid capture, but he was subdued and transferred to the local police station. ^[7] Gutiérrez Hidalgo died at the scene from gunshot wounds; Leonardi Gutiérrez, injured in the arm and head, was taken to Hospital Nacional Hipólito Unanue in Lima, where doctors confirmed his death. ^[8]
