The Trump Administration announced the immediate closure of more than 270 commercial driver license (CDL) schools across the United States. ^[1] The Government Accountability Office (GAO) recommended that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) review whether students completing aviation maintenance curricula at non-FAA-certificated high schools should be allowed to take the agency's general written knowledge test. ^[2] U.S. Army logistics leaders met at Anniston Army Depot in Alabama from August 25 to 27 to build a coordinated plan for the service's strained rail network. ^[3] Of the sanctioned institutions, 110 registered the highest index of operational violations, while 160 lacked adequate testing areas or employed instructors without valid commercial licenses. ^[4] Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy stated that federal audits revealed thousands of students obtained their certifications without demonstrating the required English fluency. ^[5] Graduates of FAA-certificated Aviation Maintenance Technician Schools can establish eligibility for the general exam through their schooling, whereas students from uncertificated high school programs generally cannot immediately take the test without additional work experience or education. ^[6] The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 directed the agency to have an Airman Knowledge Testing Working Group assess whether students who successfully complete an aviation maintenance curriculum should be allowed to take the general test. ^[7] The Army is using indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contracts with pre-approved vendors to cut procurement lead time in half, avoiding the 12 to 18 months required for separate requirements. ^[8] The Army is working with the Department of Transportation's Volpe Center to speed up rail repairs and cut some procurement timelines in half through existing contract vehicles. ^[9] The Army's Organic Industrial Base modernization plan involves a 15-year, $18 billion investment in 23 government-owned arsenals, depots, and ammunition plants. ^[10] A CDL driving instructor consulted stated that the measures are being taken solely to remove the Latino community from the industry. ^[11]
