Anthony Obodo, a student and motorist, was shot on 27 August at about 5:30 p.m. during a police pursuit in Port Harcourt; according to the police, Corporal Alfred Louis opened fire on the vehicle, and Obodo later died in a hospital. ^[1] Olugbenga Adepoju, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, said at a press briefing in Port Harcourt that four officers involved in the fatal shooting of Anthony Obodo have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and will face criminal prosecution. ^[2] ASP Usman Nuhu, filmed killing musician Oghenemine Ogidi in Delta State, and four other officers were arraigned on 30 June; Nuhu pleaded not guilty to murder, the others to lesser charges, and the court adjourned to 14 July 2026 for trial to begin, with no further updates reported. ^[3] Nwanze, partner at SBM Intelligence, said angry youths in Port Harcourt blocked Agip Road to protest the killing of Anthony Obodo, a 22-year-old University of Port Harcourt graduate, by a police officer. ^[4] Olugbenga Adepoju said the police command will not shield any officer found to have acted outside the law and expressed condolences to Obodo's family. ^[5] Nigeria is gripped by a cost-of-living crisis; fuel subsidy removal and currency devaluation have pushed food prices up, with the Jollof Index rising by over 600% since 2016. ^[6] The Rivers State police commissioner warned that the Port Harcourt protest could be 'hijacked by hoodlums', a response the author says misses the point of the legitimate grievance. ^[7]
