The Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI in the courts of São Paulo alleging unauthorized use of its journalistic content, copyright violation, and unfair competition. ^[1] Nvidia is reportedly in talks to make another investment in Perplexity AI, potentially valuing the startup at more than $30 billion. ^[2] Folha de S.Paulo accused Perplexity of bypassing technical barriers implemented to prevent automated information extraction, resulting in hundreds of thousands of unauthorized accesses to its content. ^[3] Folha de S.Paulo is seeking an immediate injunction to stop the use of its content, the destruction of the AI models involved, and financial indemnification, plus a daily fine for non-compliance. ^[4] The lawsuit claims Perplexity used articles published by Folha, including exclusive content for subscribers, to train its artificial intelligence models and generate responses for users without authorization or compensation. ^[5] According to The Information, the proposed deal could value Perplexity at more than $30 billion, which is more than 50% higher than the $20 billion valuation it secured during its last major funding round. ^[6] Perplexity's annualised revenue run rate has climbed to around $750 million from less than $250 million at the beginning of the year, according to The Information. ^[7] The reported deal would mark a major jump from Perplexity's previous $20 billion valuation. ^[8]
