On 2026-09-03, the chief of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said that the ongoing El Nino could be the strongest in four decades. ^[1] The threat of forest fires has doubled ahead of the peak of El Niño. ^[2] The United Nations warned that the world is entering a danger zone of extreme climate conditions due to a gigantic El Niño phenomenon. ^[3] Fiqri Ardiansyah, a forestry expert at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), stated on September 3, 2024, that a high number of hotspots in concession areas indicates non-compliance or land management issues that require further investigation. ^[4] Between August 13 and September 2, 18 of the 32 capitals recorded average maximum temperatures of 32°C or more. ^[5] The UN described the current situation as a danger zone of extreme climate conditions. ^[6] The UN stated that the gigantic El Niño phenomenon will reach its peak by the end of the year. ^[7] Fiqri Ardiansyah argued that future forest fire management should shift from a focus on suppression to prevention and increasing ecosystem resilience. ^[8] Fiqri Ardiansyah explained that repeated fires are influenced by human accessibility to an area, noting that regions easily reached by people have a higher potential for fires due to human activity sources. ^[9] Fiqri Ardiansyah stated that El Nino is not a direct cause of forest fires but plays a role in increasing the vulnerability of fuel to fire by raising temperatures and reducing rainfall. ^[10]
