More than 30,000 people marched in Cabo Rojo against the Esencia luxury megaproject, which the government supports for building a city for the ultra-wealthy. ^[1] Thousands of families in northern Puerto Rico queued for water from tankers after two months of rationing due to prolonged drought and poor government management. ^[2] The organization Ciudadanos del Karso (CDK) questioned President Carlos Méndez of the Chamber of Representatives for proposing legislation against water resources while pressuring the Drought Committee and the Water and Sewerage Authority (AAA) to ensure water supply in eastern Puerto Rico. ^[3] Abel Vale Nieves, president of Ciudadanos del Karso, stated that a bill would remove the legal recognition of karst as an irreplaceable resource to reclassify it as raw material. ^[4] Puerto Rico's unemployment rate hovers around 6 percent, but only 43 to 44 percent of the working-age population actively participates in the labor force. ^[5] Abel Vale Nieves, president of CDK, stated via press release that it is illogical for the Chamber President to propose amending the Law for the Protection and Conservation of the Karst Physiography of Puerto Rico (Law 292 of 1999) to allow limestone extraction and urbanization in regions containing extensive aquifers. ^[6]
