A Las Vegas jury found Duane 'Keffe D' Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, guilty of murder in the 1996 shooting death of rapper Tupac Shakur. ^[1] Davis's book and media interviews voided a protective agreement he had with authorities, and the court ruled his 2008 police interview could be used in the murder trial against him. ^[2] Key evidence in the case included Davis's own words: he repeatedly acknowledged being inside the white Cadillac from which the deadly shots were fired, including in a 2008 police interview and his 2019 memoir 'Compton Street Legend'. ^[3] Prosecutors at the trial argued that Davis ordered the shooting and supplied the gun that his nephew Orlando Anderson used to open fire, planning it as retaliation for Anderson's fight with Shakur and his crew in Las Vegas hours earlier. ^[4] Prosecutors never claimed Davis fired the gun, but stated he organized and facilitated the attack as retaliation for a prior assault on his nephew, Orlando 'Baby Lane' Anderson. ^[5] The shooting occurred on September 7, 1996, when Tupac Shakur was traveling in a BMW near the Las Vegas Strip after attending a Mike Tyson fight. ^[6] Tupac Shakur was shot from a white Cadillac and died six days later on September 13, 1996, at the age of 25. ^[7] Davis's defense attorney, Michael Sanft, argued that the prosecution's case relied on fiction and lies from Davis's 2019 autobiography and a 2008 police interview. ^[8] Prosecutor Binu Palal stated that Davis, who had previously been accused of ordering the shooting after his nephew was attacked, hired a gunman to kill Shakur. ^[9] Duane Davis, 63, was ordered held without bail and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 13, 2026. ^[10] Prosecutors argued that Davis organized the group, provided the gun, and helped carry out a retaliatory attack after Shakur and Marion Knight's entourage beat Davis' nephew, Orlando Anderson, at the MGM Grand earlier that night. ^[11] Prosecutor Binu Palal stated during closing arguments that Davis ordered the shooting after his nephew was beaten by members of Tupac Shakur's entourage at a Las Vegas casino. ^[12]
