Naftogaz won the $4.22 billion arbitration award in The Hague in 2023 over assets expropriated following Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, and with Moscow refusing to pay, the Ukrainian company is pursuing Russian state property internationally. ^[1] Norwegian authorities seized the Russian state-owned expedition cruise vessel Professor Molchanov in Svalbard on 2026-09-02, following an order from the Nord-Troms District Court that granted Ukrainian state energy company Naftogaz the right to pursue the ship as part of enforcing a $4.22 billion arbitration award against Russia. ^[2] Sweden's Supreme Court last month cleared the way for the 4,337 dwt Caffa to be handed to Ukraine; the ship was intercepted off Trelleborg in March and accused of carrying grain stolen from Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory while operating under a false flag. ^[3] The Professor Molchanov must remain in Barentsburg until Norwegian authorities or the court decide otherwise, and the governor of Svalbard said arrangements are being made for the crew and passengers onboard. ^[4] A Hague tribunal ordered Russia to pay Naftogaz $4.22 billion plus interest to compensate for its unlawful seizures in 2023. ^[5] The District Court of Nord-Trondelag and Sor-Trondelag issued a decision on August 31, 2026, clearing the way for Norway to seize the Professor Molchanov. ^[6] The seizure was part of a global effort to force Russia to pay for its illegal takeover of Naftogaz assets during the occupation of Crimea. ^[7]
