Eleven member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) met in Jakarta, Indonesia, in July to conduct a food safety emergency response simulation exercise. ^[1] President Vladimir Putin met with President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia in Vladivostok, Russia, on August 3, 2026. ^[2] Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing is visiting Vietnam for talks with its leaders in his latest effort to normalize relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and attract foreign investment. ^[3] Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on 2026-09-03 at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok that Western countries are trying to draw India into a confrontation with China by pushing a more military role for the Quad grouping. ^[4] Joseph Teo, Singapore's chief climate change negotiator, stated that ASEAN can achieve self-sufficiency in energy and food through a more integrated and cohesive regional market. ^[5] Foodborne illnesses cause more than 1.5 million deaths and 426 million illnesses each year in Asia Pacific. ^[6] The participating countries in the ASEAN food safety simulation included the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. ^[7] The simulation exercise was specifically designed to rehearse preparation for a cross-border food contamination event. ^[8] President Vladimir Putin reported that trade volume between Indonesia and Russia increased by 12% last year. ^[9] Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Myanmar fell from $853 million in 2020 to $590 million in 2025 and $335 million in the first half of 2026. ^[10] Min Aung Hlaing has stepped up diplomatic engagements since he was sworn in as president in April following an election that critics say was designed to cement the military's hold on power. ^[11] Western governments have shunned and sanctioned Min Aung Hlaing and his associates for overthrowing Aung San Suu Kyi's government in February 2021. ^[12]
