The Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI) reported on 2026-01-06 that 258 indigenous people were killed in Brazil in 2025. ^[1] Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet arrived in Brazil on Sunday to secure a meeting with President Lula da Silva regarding her candidacy for the UN Secretary-General position. ^[2] In a second preliminary vote by the UN Security Council, Bachelet received only two votes out of fifteen possible and faced six negative votes, placing her in the penultimate position among eight nominees. ^[3] CIMI registered 210 cases of incursion, illegal exploitation, and property damage in at least 151 indigenous territories in 2025. ^[4] CIMI reported that 1,024 indigenous infants and toddlers died in 2025, with 586 deaths (57%) attributed to preventable causes such as flu, pneumonia, and malnutrition. ^[5] Of the 1,443 indigenous land territories in Brazil, 897 had no administrative measures for regulation as of the report date. ^[6] Bachelet previously met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico, where Sheinbaum indicated openness to reviewing Bachelet's chances for the UN role. ^[7] Bachelet's campaign faces pressure to withdraw following the adverse results of the informal polling in the UN Security Council. ^[8]
