President Donald Trump signed an executive order on 2025-08-27 ordering that Lake Ontario be renamed Lake America amid an escalating trade war with Canada. ^[1] The United Nations General Assembly voted 164 to 1, with six abstentions, to support a campaign for cartographic justice advocating for accurate world maps. ^[2] The African Union has officially endorsed the #CorrectTheMap Campaign, urging the United Nations and the global community to adopt a different world map projection. ^[3] Apple began adopting the name and by 2025-09-02 its Apple Maps app displayed 'Lake America' for the lake. ^[4] Google changed the name to Lake America on Google Maps for U.S. users two days after the order, on 2025-08-29. ^[5] MapQuest refused to adopt the name and posted on social media 'We're not changing it' along with a map labeled 'Lake Ontario.' ^[6] African countries united to push for the UN vote, complaining that most world maps based on the 16th-century Mercator projection wrongly exaggerate land masses and diminish Africa's size. ^[7] The Trump administration was the sole opposing voice in the UN General Assembly vote, denouncing the proposal as a radical ideological project. ^[8] Traditional maps typically portray Canada and Greenland as being as large as the entire African continent, despite Africa being 14 times bigger than Greenland and three times bigger than Canada. ^[9] Africa is described as the largest continent in the global south but is visually diminished on the Mercator projection, which shows Greenland as similar in size to Africa despite Africa being 14 times larger. ^[10] The #CorrectTheMap Campaign currently has over 4,500 signatures and calls for the replacement of the Mercator projection with the Equal Earth map projection. ^[11] The Mercator projection, created over 450 years ago, inflates the size of countries closer to the North and South Poles while under-representing the size of South America and Africa. ^[12]
