At least eight people died when the double-hulled vessel started taking in water and overturned shortly after leaving the port town of Kyrenia on Sunday with 267 passengers and crew on board. ^[1] Emergency crews are searching for 20 people missing after a ferry capsized off northern Cyprus, killing at least eight people. ^[2] A ferry named 'Filo Jet' sank off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday after taking on water and capsizing a few kilometers from the shore. ^[3] Official reports state that eight people died in the incident while 239 passengers were rescued. ^[4] Eight bodies have been recovered from the wreck, while 20 passengers remain missing and are presumed to be inside the ship. ^[5] Tufan Erhurman, the leader of the self-declared republic of Northern Cyprus, announced on 2026-09-02 that the sunken high-speed ferry Express Filojet has been located. ^[6] The wreck lies on the seabed at a depth of more than 500 metres (1,640 feet), beyond the reach of the resources available locally. ^[7] Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman said the incoming team would bring specialised equipment to explore the wreck and surrounding seabed. ^[8] A specialized Turkish rescue ship, the TCG ISIN, is expected to arrive in Northern Cyprus on Tuesday to conduct a dive to the wreck. ^[9] The captain and crew of the Express Filojet were arrested on suspicion of negligence following the disaster. ^[10] There were 267 passengers on board the Express Filojet at the time of the sinking. ^[11]
