Üstra, the public transport operator of Hanover, Germany, has launched a six-month pilot project in which its security subsidiary protec tests body cameras on patrol staff. ^[1] Volkswagen announced that its supervisory board has unanimously approved a plan to cut a total of 100,000 jobs by the end of 2030. ^[2] Volkswagen's supervisory board approved the Future Plan 2030, which mandates a workforce adjustment of approximately 50,000 positions including management roles. ^[3] According to Üstra, recordings may only be made to protect employees or other people, for de-escalation, to secure evidence, and to enforce house rules; the start of a recording must be announced verbally and a red LED lights up. ^[4] According to Üstra, the body cameras aim to de-escalate conflicts and protect passengers and employees, and the mere announcement of a recording is expected to have a deterrent effect. ^[5] Security staff and their managers cannot view or evaluate the footage; only after an official request can a team outside the security area access it, unused recordings are automatically deleted after three days, and affected persons receive an information card. ^[6] The approved restructuring plan includes a further reduction of 50,000 positions on top of another 50,000 jobs already agreed upon. ^[7] The restructuring is being driven by US tariffs, fierce competition from Chinese rivals, and years of falling profits and overproduction in Europe. ^[8] Volkswagen stated that the total of 100,000 job cuts represents approximately 15% of the carmaker's total workforce of more than 650,000 people. ^[9] The Future Plan 2030 targets annual sales of 9 million vehicles and an operating margin of 9% by 2030, which equals an operating result of about EUR 31 billion. ^[10]
