The Midtjylland Region announced in a press release that free parking for patients at hospitals in the region is part of a 2027 budget agreement reached on Thursday night. ^[1] Anders G. Christensen, chairman of the Midtjylland Region, stated that calculations received during 2026 showed that a free parking scheme for everyone would be significantly more expensive than expected and risk creating parking chaos around hospitals. ^[2] Free parking was previously approved before the budget agreement last year but was not implemented in 2026 because calculations showed there was insufficient capacity to accommodate the cars and it would be more expensive than anticipated. ^[3] Martin Bødtker Mortensen, a heart doctor and researcher at Aarhus University Hospital who was not involved in the study, said the study reveals a 'huge prevention potential' and that atherosclerosis begins very early in life. ^[4] The Danish-Spanish REACT study examined 16,808 healthy adults aged 18-70 using ultrasound and CT scans to detect hidden atherosclerosis. ^[5] Within the REACT study cohort, approximately 1 in 13 participants aged 18-29 were found to have early atherosclerotic deposits in their blood vessels. ^[6] The original plan included free parking for relatives and employees, but this will not be fulfilled initially; instead, three hours of free parking for relatives will be introduced at hospitals in Randers and Silkeborg. ^[7] Mortensen said that most young people can halt the disease by living healthily, and that it's never too early to adopt a healthy lifestyle. ^[8]
