Harshit Godha, a UK-educated marketing graduate, founded Galil Avo India to address the shortage of high-quality avocado saplings in the Indian market. ^[1] In 2019, Harshit Godha invested ₹50 lakh to transform a 5-acre barren plot in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, into an avocado orchard using advanced Israeli hydroponic techniques. ^[2] The Indo-Israel Avocado Nursery business, established in 2021, now houses over 20,000 plants and supplies around 18,000 avocado plants to farmers across India. ^[3] Harshit Godha spent a month in Israel to learn avocado farming techniques before returning to India to implement them locally. ^[4] Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty promoted avocado for skincare around 2011, causing prices to double overnight and driving a surge in demand. ^[5] Manilal Palliyath states that India imports approximately 15,000 tonnes of avocados every year while domestic production is only about 8,000-9,000 tonnes. ^[6] Sunil Bopaiah, group manager at Cottanad Plantations in Kerala, India, states that avocados were initially planted as shade trees for coffee plantations before becoming a profitable crop. ^[7] Cottanad Plantations harvested between 10 and 15 tonnes of avocados last year and aims to increase production to 40 to 50 tonnes within three to four years. ^[8]
