The blackout originated from damage to two 400-kilovolt high-tension transmission lines caused by acts of vandalism. ^[1] The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) announced on the early morning of September 1 that electricity supply was restored to 100% for users in Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Chiapas. ^[2] A power outage caused by the failure of two 400 kV transmission lines on the Escárcega-Ticul stretch affected approximately 500,000 users in Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Chiapas starting at 7:21 PM on August 31, 2026. ^[3] The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) stated on the night of August 31 that vandalism caused power supply disruptions in the southeast of Mexico, specifically affecting Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Chiapas. ^[4] CFE personnel worked through the night of August 31 to September 1 to repair the infrastructure and re-energize the lines in coordination with the National Energy Control Center (Cenace). ^[5] Energy Secretary Luz Elena González Escobar stated that a total of 745,533 users were affected across the four states, with Yucatán accounting for 430,840 users, Quintana Roo 278,969, Chiapas 18,186, and Campeche 17,538. ^[6] Luz Elena González Escobar, head of the Energy Secretariat (Sener), stated that the outage interrupted service to 171 medium-voltage circuits in the region. ^[7] Numerous users in Cancún, Chetumal, and Mérida disputed CFE's claim, reporting that they continued to have no service or severe voltage fluctuations well into the morning of September 1, 2026. ^[8] The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) claimed on its social media accounts at 3:08 AM on September 1, 2026, that it had fully restored the energy supply to users in the four affected states. ^[9] The CFE reported that electrical service was restored to 100% by 3:00 AM on September 1 following the repair of two high-voltage lines. ^[10] Users on social media disputed the CFE's claim that service was fully restored and reported that electrical surges damaged their appliances. ^[11] The CFE did not provide evidence regarding how third parties allegedly damaged the infrastructure nor did they report on other damages beyond the outages. ^[12]
