Carlene Hunte-Nelson, a Vincentian public policy scholar, was named one of six 2026-2027 Eisner Prize Fellows. ^[1] The Eisner Prize Fellowship awarded to Carlene Hunte-Nelson provides $50,000 in funding to launch an intergenerational initiative in New York City. ^[2] Researchers at Columbia University found that adult neurogenesis, the process of new neurons forming in the adult hippocampus, stalls in individuals with major depressive disorder. ^[3] Carlene Hunte-Nelson is a Dean's Distinguished Fellow and a Master of Public Administration candidate in Urban and Social Policy at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). ^[4] The initiative, called Bridge Builders, will pair older, long-settled immigrant New Yorkers with younger, recently arrived immigrants who share similar cultural backgrounds. ^[5] Columbia University researchers discovered that this adult neurogenesis process plays a key role in protecting against depression. ^[6] While most of the brain's 100 billion neurons develop before birth, a small stream of new neurons continues forming in the adult hippocampus. ^[7] The study findings offer insights for future treatments of major depressive disorder. ^[8]
