A car bomb attack on the Los Patios police station in Cúcuta killed one person and injured two police officers and nine civilians on August 31. ^[1] The Colombian Ombudsman's Office released the Follow-up Report 026-2026 on the Early Warning Alert Structural No. 027-2024 on August 8, 2026, covering San José de Cúcuta, Puerto Santander, Villa del Rosario, and Los Patios. ^[2] Iris Marín stated that the recruitment of children is absolutely prohibited by international humanitarian law and that the state has an obligation to reinforce protection measures. ^[3] Iris Marín, the Ombudsman of Colombia, stated on September 1, 2026, that her office identified 1,173 cases of child recruitment between 2024 and July 31, 2026. ^[4] Colombian Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara announced on September 2 that the government would file a project to issue an antiterrorist statute to combat criminal groups. ^[5] Human rights organizations in Colombia warned that the government's reactivation of arrest warrants against FARC dissident leaders could deepen the armed confrontation in the Catatumbo region. ^[6] Nine civilians were affected by the blast and were transported to medical centers for treatment. ^[7] The Metropolitan Police of Cúcuta confirmed that the explosion occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. in front of the Los Patios police station. ^[8] Two police officers were injured in the attack, and the explosion caused damage to the police station's infrastructure and vehicles. ^[9] Homicides in the Cúcuta metropolitan area rose to 444 in 2025, representing a 15.0% increase compared to the previous year. ^[10] The report states that out of 39 recommendations formulated regarding armed risk in Cúcuta, state compliance averages low, with only 19 prevention and protection measures adopted. ^[11] Medicina Legal reported that 73 children, adolescents, and minors died as a consequence of military operations between August 7, 2022, and June 23, 2026, with 31 of these deaths occurring in 2025 in Guaviare. ^[12]
