The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) published a final notice in the Federal Register revising the U.S. Standards for Grades of Mushrooms. ^[1] The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service announced plans to purchase $57.5 million in fresh citrus through the Section 32 procurement program. ^[2] The American Mushroom Institute (AMI), the national trade association representing U.S. mushroom growers, processors, and marketers, says this update is the result of a six-year effort. ^[3] The revised Standards take effect on September 24, 2026. ^[4] This revision represents the first substantive update to the federal grading standards since they were established on July 15, 1966. ^[5] The $57.5 million purchase includes $20 million in fresh oranges, $12.5 million in fresh grapefruit, and $25 million in fresh mandarins. ^[6] California Citrus Mutual applauded the USDA announcement and stated that California growers are expected to benefit significantly from the purchases. ^[7] The Section 32 program allows the USDA to purchase domestically produced agricultural commodities for distribution through food banks, schools, and other nutrition assistance programs. ^[8]
