Amanda Leigh Quinonez, 34, a former language arts teacher and water polo coach at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Riverside, California, pleaded guilty in March 2026 to two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object, one count of providing sexually explicit material to a minor, and one count of lewd acts on a child, according to Patch. ^[1] The Vilamoura condominium complex homeowners association in San Clemente, California, issued a mandatory emergency assessment of more than $26,000 per unit to all 198 units for complete roof replacements, bypassing the normal community voting process by declaring the work an emergency. ^[2] Quinonez sobbed and apologized in court, saying she had failed as a teacher, and broke down in tears as the victim's mother condemned her sexual relationship with the student. ^[3] Quinonez was arrested in April 2022 after police were alerted about her behavior by unnamed witnesses. ^[4] The victim's mother told the court that her son had gone through extreme hardship because of the abuse, and that both the victim and his older brother were forced to leave the school due to bullying from other students as a result of the relationship. ^[5] Beverly Albright, an 81-year-old Vilamoura resident, said in an interview with ABC7 Eyewitness News that she will have to move and that she worked hard to keep her home. ^[6] California law allows homeowners association boards to impose special assessments without a vote only in limited emergency situations, such as immediate threats to a building's structure or repairs ordered by a court. ^[7] Residents opposing the assessment claim that the roof replacement does not qualify as a real emergency, saying the board allowed the roofs to deteriorate for years and is calling it an emergency to avoid a community vote. ^[8]
