British designer John Galliano announced on Monday that he has decided not to participate in the exhibition the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) was planning to dedicate to him for the 2027 Met Gala. ^[1] John Galliano announced via social media that the exhibition would not take place, stating, 'After much reflection and discussion with all involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is better for the exhibition not to take place at this moment.' ^[2] The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York confirmed the cancellation of its planned 2027 spring exhibition titled 'John Galliano: Horizons' on September 1, 2026. ^[3] Galliano stated in an Instagram post that he recognized the damage caused by his past words and did not want the debate to place the Met in a difficult situation or distract from the work of the Institute of the Costume. ^[4] The decision follows opposition from Jewish leaders and museum donors who refused to honor Galliano due to his antisemitic and racist comments from 2011. ^[5] The Metropolitan Museum of Art confirmed the cancellation and stated that details for a new exhibition for the upcoming Met Gala would be announced later. ^[6] Galliano was convicted in France in 2011 for antisemitic insults made in a Paris bar, an incident that led to his dismissal as creative director of Dior after 15 years. ^[7] Galliano issued a statement acknowledging full responsibility for the pain caused by his past words, particularly to Jewish and Asian communities, and expressed deep regret. ^[8]
