Ottawa experienced a 1-in-200-year storm event in the summer of 2025, receiving 167 millimeters of rain in five hours which triggered nearly 5,800 reports of basement flooding. ^[1] A study titled 'Photovoltaic panel arrays reshape soil erosion patterns and hydrodynamic processes on hillslopes' was published in the Journal of Hydrology by researchers from China's Northwest A&F University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. ^[2] Installing rain gardens in streetside municipal rights-of-way alone reduced the flooded area to 2 hectares (5 acres), a 76% reduction despite occupying less ground than private lot gardens. ^[3] Rain gardens installed in both private lots and streetside rights-of-way reduced the flooded area to 1.2 hectares (3 acres), achieving an 86% reduction. ^[4] Researchers developed a computer model of the Crystal Beach neighborhood in Ottawa to simulate flood scenarios using the actual rainfall record from the July 1 storm. ^[5] The researchers stated that erosive energy accumulated longitudinally, with flow velocity rising by 148% from the uppermost to the lowermost covered zone under laminar (Re <500) and subcritical (Fr <1.0) conditions, indicating the downslope-most panel row constitutes the critical location for foundation scour. ^[6] Transverse rills, or small erosion channels running across the slope, developed beneath the drip lines in every PV configuration tested, while none formed on the bare slopes. ^[7]
