Scientists identified six previously unknown geological structures located approximately 2,900 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface at the boundary between the mantle and the outer core. ^[1] An artificial intelligence algorithm was used to identify weak signal dispersions that were previously confused with background noise. ^[2] Researchers processed more than two million precursor PKP seismic waves recorded between 1990 and 2024 from earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 6.0. ^[3] The discovery changes the understanding of internal planetary dynamics, thermal convection, and the evolution of tectonic plates that have disappeared over millions of years. ^[4] Deep learning algorithms were utilized to identify small variations in seismic waves and distinguish real signals from noise and monitoring network limitations. ^[5] The newly discovered structures are located at a depth of approximately 2,900 kilometers within the Earth. ^[6]
